At Roots, we believe great food shouldn’t cost the earth.

We work to ensure our food is ethically and locally sourced so that we can live in harmony with the planet that sustains us.

We also know just how important nutrition is to our wellbeing – mind, body and soul. That’s why we strive to create food that inspires and nourishes our physical, mental and emotional health.

Our mission is to provide fresh, healthy dishes to help everyone be the best they can be. 


We specialise in catering for all dietary requirements, including:

• Vegetarian (V)
• Vegan (VG)
• Gluten-free (GF) and
• Allergy-specific diners

We also offer the best quality meat and dairy options for our omnivorous customers!

Of course, we know how important the sweet treat is for the soul, so we make them little (and scrummy).

Our planet

We work seasonally. We recycle, up-cycle and strive toward a zero-waste future.

And, of course, you’ll never see any single-use plastics in our packaging and our drinks offerings.

Our team

The well-being and fair treatment of our team is core to everything we believe.

We provide great working conditions, loads of employee benefits, and a happy, huggy and wholesome working environment.

The little ones

At Roots, we welcome children and doggies and have created delicious, wholesome and fun menus for both.

Our doggie menu has been co-designed by our wee pup, Dougal who is still sooo excited about it, that he tends to “greet” everyone who comes through the door really loudly. (We’re working on that.) 

Our community

Our commitment to helping protect the planet starts with our community.

We have already built amazing relationships with some incredible organisations, including Steps to Hope and Rock Trust.

We’re also working to establish a range of free community projects, including;

  • Nutrition and cookery classes for folks who’ve had some struggles
  • Teaching kids about growing and preparing food
  • Hospitality training for those looking to get back to work

Our history

Roots Edinburgh was founded by Cat and Mark Spence-Ishaq in 2017.

Both Cat and Mark have over twenty years working in the hospitality industry, working in some of Edinburgh’s finest restaurants.

The couple founded Roots with a simple mission; to make amazing, healthy food accessible to all. Along with their furry four-legged son Dougal and their (less hairy) daughter Emmeline, the Spence-Ishaq family have been sharing their dishes with Edinburgh’s West End ever since.
